Removal of Indians essays In the early 1800's, the colonists in the United States were on the move, and the country was expanding westward. This left little land for the Native Americans to live on. By 1839, thirteen thousand Cherokees were driven into Indian Territory (later Oklahoma), in what became known as the Trail of Tears. There were principal arguments made for the removal of the Cherokee Indians. According to Discovering the American Past, I can see one man that delivered these principal arguments: Andrew Jackson. In this paper, I will discuss the principal arguments given by Jackson, for the removal of the Cherokee. Andrew Jackson once wrote that Cherokees have neither the intelligence, the industry, the moral habits, nor the desire of improvement... in their condition. This quote automatically led me to believe that Jackson was totally for the removal of the Indians. Jackson was the president during the time of the removal of the Cherokee. He made his first annual message to Congress on December 8, 1829. In this address, he gave some reasons for the Indian removal. According to Jackson, the whites had been trying to convert the Indians from their savage ways. Some of the Southern Indian tribes were trying to create an independent government, inside Georgia and Alabama. These states extended their laws over the Indians, which caused the latter to call upon the United States for protection. The Constitution states that no new State shall be formed or erected within the jurisdiction of any other State, without the consent of its legislature. Jackson said that if this holds to be true, then a foreign, independent government could definitely not establish itself there. Jackson believed that in moving the Indians, it would be beneficial for them to move to the Indian Territory. Titus Andronicus is a Roman general, who is in charge of a leadership position in the army that fights the Goths and defeats them in cruel and bloody war. Before the war is finished Titus wants to execute the son of the queen of Goths, Tamara, who pleads for the mercy for her son as it is normally said that the pain of childbirth should be enquired from the mother. Titus though defies the pleas of the mother and goes ahead to kill Tamara’s son anyway (Shakespeare 157). After the bloody killing of Tamara’s sons by Titus, the queen swears to revenge on Titus’ kingdom and initiates a total bloodbath.

Contrast: Primary School Essay

My primary school was in a small village, just half a kilometer away from my house. I had left my village to study in Ho Chi Minh City for a long time. Last summer, I came back to the village to visit my primary school. It considerably changed. I realized that there are differences and similarities between my primary school in the past and now. I still remembered my first day at school. My father led me to school. In front of me, two green pines rows were very luxuriant. Especially, I was impressed by large and beautiful school’s gate. It was painted in blue  and the large of words â€Å"Vo Thi Sau primary school† in white set off the signs plate of school. Moreover, it was decorated with colorful flags. My school was small, simple and lack of basic facilities. It became difficult to accommodate all students in the ten classrooms. In addition, all of classrooms were made by wood that wasn’t safety. Besides, the narrow space of school was not enough for eating or reading books. For example, because of not having canteen I must eat snack or even junk food at the store around the sidewalks. Furthermore, quality of drinking water and  toilets facilities were not adapt to student’s health. My school yard was an open area next to my school building for playing and outdoor activities. It was narrow because on its surface was a lot of the weeds, and bushes. It was not covered by cements, but there were sand and little rocks. Although it was not large space, children can play together, interact and communicate. I had not visited my primary school for more than 14 years. Now I walk along the street leads to that school, and I am still impressed by school’s gate. There is no considerably change on school gate. It was made by stone, and it is still exactly the same as the past. Moreover, school’s gate still includes white inscription â€Å"Vo Thi Sau primary school† on the blue background. In addition, there are two lines of pine beside two sides of the school’s gate. It is as green as grass and so fresh. After that, I walk into the school and I realize that my school significantly changed. As I remember, my primary school was small and simple. Today, it is a new and modern building with unique design. For instance, there are forty classrooms and two labs. Furthermore, it also has a library and a canteen. Those classrooms are equipped with iron boards, projectors and ceiling fans. Besides, desks and chairs are repainted, so I can’t recognize my old classroom anymore. Additionally, library and lab has more useful books and equipment that serve student’s needs. On the other hand, one thing changed that attracts me is school yard. Instead of stone and gravel, it is covered with concrete. Thanks to that, it looks more beautiful and luxury. In the campus, many plants and flowers are planted. Because of that, the school looks clean, green and the atmosphere is fresher. Around the school yard, it is arranged with a lot of benches. Those benches are useful for students in the break time. In conclusion, for a long time I had left, my primary school has a more changed. If in the past my primary school was old, lack of facilities, small buildings, now it is a modern and spacious school. Although my primary school changed so much, it is always in my mind where I learned everything when I was a little child.

Analysis of Ahab Moby Dick Essay

1. Dictator: Melville describes Ahab as a dictator. He, as the captain, is the most respectful figure in the Pequod. Some critics say that the novel is a metaphor from the world. Everyone depends of one person. It is a political point of view. The Pequod is seen as a small world. He is a â€Å"grand, ungodly, god-like† man. Ahab is ungodly in that he refuses to submit to any higher power. He does not worship or even acknowledge the superiority of forces beyond himself. Ahab is god-like in that he is larger than life. 2. Obsession: Ahab considers Moby Dick the embodiment of evil in the world, and he pursues the White Whale monomaniacally because he believes it his inescapable fate to destroy this evil. He is obsessed with revenge. Moby Dick dominates the personality of Ahab. He gradually goes crazier and crazier, eventually blaming Moby Dick for everything bad that has ever happened to any human being ever since the beginning of time. Melville describes Ahab as a â€Å"monomaniac,† an interesting word because it suggests two things: first, that Ahab’s insanity focuses itself obsessively on a single thing (Moby Dick), and second, that he’s only insane when it comes to that one thing – he can be rational about just about everyone else. 3. Suffering: Ahab believes that his suffering stems from the White Whale known as Moby Dick. . He lost more than leg the first time he fought against Moby Dick: he lost his pride, his free will, and his very being. His sole purpose after this encounter was to kill Moby-Dick, all else was cast aside. His wife, home, friends, and family do not even cross his mind. Ahab basically spends his life alone in the sea. He feels in home when he is in the ocean. He is always looking for Moby Dick, looking along. He has not friends; he is a romantic hero. Ahab is not a happy human being, he is like heroes of Shakespearean tragedy. He is suffering for the pain he has inside from the beginning to the end of the novel. Close to the end of the novel Melville makes a reflection about Ahab’s life, trying to humanize him. He is lamenting everything on his life.

Subsequent events furthe r led to the House of Representatives’ decision that supported Lincoln for his suspension of the Habeas Corpus. This decision was reversed in 1866. This was due to the absence of any threat to the Confederation. The Supreme Court restored the Habeas Corpus throughout the nation and declared the military courts illegal in areas where civilian courts could operate .In Ex Parte Quirin, a case during World War 2 which involved German saboteurs who disembarked on submarines in New York and Florida, the military commissions in charge of the trials sentenced the saboteurs to death. The Supreme Court used the â€Å"enemy combatant’s† bill to justify this. Upon the application of Habeas Corpus by one of the defendants, the court denied him application in the reason that his status of ‘’unlawful combatant’’ did not allow him full citizenship rights on which he had applied for Habeas Corpus. In the light of the war against terrorism, the question tests the morality of the institutionalization of this act by the regime of Bush. These writs are America’s cornerstones of the rule of law (Lijphart, 1977). According to the U.S Supreme Court, five justices comprising of Justices Kennedy, Stevens, Souter, Ginsburg and Breyer attempted to restore the originality of the writ of Habeas Corpus. They also tried to reassert America to its original core constitutional principles. They removed the tenets of the Military Commissions Act and the Detainee Treatment Act. The five questioned the historic al and political influences over this bill in that it had led to the creation of the Guantanamo Bay. In contravention to the constitutional requirement that any prisoner held by any American authority had to be entitled to a fair trial before imprisonment, the detainees who had never seen justice for over six years got a chance to be presented in a court of law. The five Justices used the following principles: Habeas Corpus is a historical right and based on the proceedings of Rasul vs. Bush (544 U.S, 466, 2004) and its final decision, the five Justices faulted the decisions made by Bush’s administration in relation to the Habeas Corpus and argued that Guantanamo Bay is a territory of the US. That led to the unanswered question of whether Guantanamo Bay was a product of the executive’s desire to create an empire of lawlessness away from the scrutiny of the judiciary under the pretext of safeguarding the American people and interests. In my perspective, a decision by th e Bush administration had to be made in order to address the situation and the administration had to find a way of addressing the situation and still free itself from legal scrutiny. This must have been the reason behind the lease of land outside the American territory. In denying the detainees their constitutional rights to Habeas Corpus, Bush’s administration came up with CSRT and maintained that it met all the constitutional requirements (Halliday, 2010). The five justices argued that the constitution stipulated that â€Å"†¦..for a court that conducts the Habeas Corpus proceedings must be able to correct the errors that occurred during the CSRT proceedings†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦..’’in restoring the Habeas Corpus. It was agreed that the CSRT had been marred by prejudicial intentions and all its decisions were unconstitutional .The administration knew the odds that stood against it and in order to find legal grounds of operations, the legal system of operation ha d to be instituted and it did this in the name of CSRT. However, despite the unilateral agreements, there was a point of dissent from within the judicial systems. Justice Scalia, Chief Justice Thomas and Justice Alito charged the five with ‘’manipulation of the writs of Habeas Corpus using the right of judicial supremacy’ thereby endangering the country. This was clearly in support of the past actions of Bush’s administration. Steve plans to charge $200 an hour plus concession sale, the two hour public skating would be charged at a rate of $5 per person which would yield up to $3500 for two hours plus a higher concession rate. By operating a large public skating session Fulton expected to earn a profitable turnover. Fulton’s evening session on Friday and Saturday were rated at $5 per person and $1.50 for skate rental. Steve has invested more than $3000 in lighting and about $9000 in promotional activity mainly promoting the rock music radio station which proved to be a failure.
